You are invited to join the LIVE (via Zoom) 2020 NAGS 3MT competition, Wednesday, December 9 from 3-5 p.m. EST. Register here to attend. A confirmation email will include the link to join the event.  

Hosted by the University of New Hampshire, the 3MT competition will feature winners of each NAGS member’s own competition, with the winner and runner-up being sent to the upcoming Council of Graduate Schools national competition.

Additionally, we are asking one individual from each NAGS institution to serve as a 3MT judge (one judge per institution). Complete this short form with the contact information for your institution’s judge by 5 p.m. on Monday, December 7. Judges must be present for all 3MT presentations in order to vote for the 3MT winner.

Judging process: 

• Students will present live and votes will be collected from each judge
• Judges will vote for one person only
• 1st and 2nd place winners will be determined by the votes
• A People’s Choice award will be selected through a poll distributed to ALL institutional attendees

Due to scheduling conflicts, the webinar session on mentoring has been rescheduled for Friday, December 18, 2020. Details about the session along with the registration link are listed below. 

In addition, the webinar on hosting virtual graduate research conferences previously scheduled for December 18 will be scheduled for sometime in the near future. 

Issues and Best Practices in Developing Mentoring Relationships

Join us for a facilitated discussion on developing mentoring relationships between students and faculty. Moderated by Dr. Elizabeth Kenney, a panel of deans and administrators will discuss best practices and issues in mentoring from both a student and faculty-based perspective. Discussion items will include what ‘good mentoring’ looks like, tips for students and faculty to establish their mentoring relationship, and advice for deans.

• Hosting virtual graduate research conferences + 3MT competitions on December 18, 2020: facilitated by Cari Moorhead and others from UNH
  • Best practices in hosting research conferences and competitions virtually.

November and December webinar events are open to all NAGS institutions (Zoom links will be provided) and the December 2020 3MT competition is open to NAGS institutions that had paid dues in AY 2019-20. 

Colleagues,

The NAGS Executive Committee met recently to discuss planned events for NAGS institutional members during the 2020-21 academic year. The pandemic has posed many challenges for all of us, so we hope to provide some positive news. We are pleased to announce that there will be no charge for any events for any representative from a NAGS member institution who has paid 2020-21 annual dues. 

Here’s what we have planned:

During the fall and winter months, NAGS will host a series of informational webinars each focused on topics that graduate deans and their staff are currently facing. Webinar topics tentatively scheduled for November and December include:

• Mentoring Graduate Students
• Student Mental Health

In the spring, the annual meeting will transition to a one day virtual event to be held on Friday, April 9, 2021. The winners of all five student and faculty awards will be announced at the annual meeting. Awards nomination instructions and submission forms can be found here.

NAGS also plans to sponsor two 3MT competitions. The first competition will be held on December 9 (3-5pm) for all institutional 3MT winners who were unable to participate this past spring. The competition will be held live over Zoom. Please see the submission instructions and details on presentation format here.

The second 3MT competition will be held in the spring sometime near the annual meeting date.

The webinars, 3MT competitions, and the annual meeting all provide an excellent opportunity to network with graduate school colleagues from other Northeast institutions, and all of the events are free for current NAGS members. If your institution is not currently a member of the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools, we hope you will consider joining! Renewal notices will be mailed in hard copy to institutional members who have not paid annual dues for 2020-21.
